breakfast at melissa's

Breakfastatmelissa

Happy [belated] 4th of July! We started off the day enjoying breakfast with Melissa's family. She made the most delicious meal--baked french toast, oven roasted potatoes and berries with fresh whipped cream. We dined outside under a big ol' tree, enjoying an unusually crisp summer morning. I had to laugh when my husband asked if I was going to take a photograph of the breakfast table before we started eating. Why, yes, brilliant idea! And I couldn't resist a shot of the boys eating + playing.

Later on in the day we went to our friend's annual 4th of July BBQ at the park. It was fun to catch up with people we haven't seen in several months. Good food and good friends, can't think of a better way to spend a long weekend.

Thank you for all the nice comments regarding the baby shower gift. I had several questions about how I appliqued the onesies. This is a super easy project. Basically there are five steps: 1) iron on a fusible stabilizer to the backside of the fabric, 2) cut out the desired shape, 3) peel off the stabilizer backing, 4) iron on applique to garment, 5) machine/hand-stitch the applique. You can stitch along the edges of the applique, like I did here. If you choose not to stitch along the edge of the applique it may "fray" a little over time, but I tend to like this look. I hope this mini tutorial helps those who had questions.

Thank you somuch for your mini tutorial. I had just come back from the store where I bought this "wonder-under" so I'm happy to see this is the way you made it!. The breakfast looks delicious! It's nice having a crafty friend around :)

Mmmm, hungry for berries now! I really like those appliqued onesies and will have to try that for future baby shower gifts (goodness knows there's enough of them coming up); thanks for the quick tutorial! : )

Thanks for the little tutorial Sally. I'll remember those hints! I'm about to make some tops for my girls, just can't find any tops that are suitable to stitch things on to at the moment !!!

De-lurking to say thanks for the tutorial - I was wondering how that was done :)

Thanks for the tutorial!

Lovely! Darling pic of the boys together.

A fellow Portlander here (well actually over in Tigard) de-lurking to say thanks so much for the mini appliqué tutorial! I think I have some Wonder Under around here somewhere, so I'm gonna go search it out. I've been wanting to do some appliqué t-shirts for my little boy since I've been so disappointed with the clothes selection for little boys in the stores for spring/summer....hey do you have any recommendations on patterns for cute little boy shorts? That's what I want to try next. Your new skirt is super cute by the way! Very nice job! :)

Those strawberries look so good!

Ha! I was thinking wonder-under. Thank you sooo much! I have a friend that's due on the 24th, I would loove to make her a few cute things. I absolutely love looking at the things you make (and your adorable kids!)

I just ran across your blog and your work is lovely! And your kids are sooo darn cute!

Thanks for the tutorial. I've wanted to applique for quite some time but hadn't got around to it. This is inspiring me to do it as it seems so easy.

hi Sally. i know this is an old post of yours but i was wondering if you could answer a question for me.
when you are doing an applique, what kind of fusible stabilizer do you use? is it a double-sided type that has the 'glue' on both sides? do you have a specific product name i can search (the link doesn't work)?
i'd really appreciate some advice. thank you so much (in advance). and by the way i read your blog regularly and it is gorgeous :)
