After spending the past several weeks focusing on making things for the shoppe, I was in need of some quality "just for fun" crafting time. Last weekend I spent most of my free time [aka naptime or sleeptime for the boys] making my new summer skirts as well as sprucing up our breakfast nook. I wanted to make some tissue paper pom poms after seeing Martha's new kit in the store. But instead of buying the kit [I wasn't too keen on the tissue paper colors], I just used my own tissue paper + wire and followed the online tutorial. Easy peasy.
I love the grey pom poms, they bring a coolness to the room as they float and sway when the patio door is open. We have a bright orange pom pom floating around in the living room and I also experimented making a pom pom using two different tissue paper colors. I think using patterned tissue paper would also be cute. Big J made a few pom poms, but I didn't get a chance to take any photographs before they were kicked around the house and shredded to pieces [didn't you know pom poms also make great "beach balls"?].
And I finally got around to making a patchwork + runner, it has been on my "to do" list for a long time.
I pieced together strips of fabric, added a layer of thin batting and machine quilted the whole thing. The backing is a solid grey fabric, but next time around I will either embroider a design or make another patchwork piece so the runner can be reversible.
Hooray for "just for fun" crafting!

wonderful! i've made powder pink martha pom poms and they turned out looking like peonies. i love the gray ones you made - they remind me of hydrangeas.

I just finished a bunch of teeny tiny pom-poms for my tree, and they are fun. Yours look lovely in gray, mine are much more peony-like in pink.

Wow Sally! It really is fun just creating for pleasure. It shows in the outcome. The Table runner is my absolute fave, I love the colors, texture and the lines. You have inspired me today! Enjoy it!

how beautiful sally.
i love the gray. i'm thinking about soft mobiles for the babies room. this might work, and it would be good visual stimulation when there is a breeze.

I love the pom poms, I hope to try those out when I get some free time. And the runner is GORGEOUS. The fabric is lovely, and such a great idea. I am loving that room right now!

Oh I really love the runner. Looking at it's loveliness makes me really wish I knew how to sew. Sadly, my hubby's sewing machine and I have a longstanding hate-hate relationship.

More beautiful work. I think the gray was a perfect choice for the pom-poms--they look very cool and soothing. Also: your little nook is as big as our living room, I think!

Thanks for the tutorial link, it was the one thing that would have driven me to Michael's and you know what that means, scads of other purchases I never knew needed to happen prior to setting my foot in the door. Now I can pom pom in safety.
