book :: simple sewing for baby

My sister will be having her third baby in the next few weeks and I really need to get my act together and make something for my new niece. As I was flipping through my sewing books, I came across an old favorite, Lotta Jansdotter's Simple Sewing for Baby. I received this book last year while living in Korea and fell in love with the Simple Dress pattern because, well, it really is a simple dress to make.

Lotta book

I actually made this dress last year for my niece's birthday [my sister's 2nd child]. I chose a soft, lightweight cotton from my Jin Market fabric stash, perfect for the hot summers in LA. I opted to make a contrasting bias tape for the armholes and neck. And instead of sewing in a loop of elastic or ribbon at the back opening I opted for a simple button + tab closure. One of the great things about this style of dress is it can easily turn into a tunic once the baby gets bigger.

a is for amy + awesome

Amy's new book, Bend the Rules with Fabric , is fantastic! I received my copy last week and have been carrying it with me everywhere. Not only is it jam-packed with so many fun projects, the photography is amazing and the photo styling is pure perfection.

Amy 1

There are so many wonderful projects in this book [and many that don't require a lot of time or supplies--a plus in my book!]. I think the family band t-shirts are pretty darn awesome and something my boys would LOVE to wear [I have a feeling Baby J will be a rocker later on in life]. I've always thought I would need to take a class on silkscreening, but the other night Amy talked me through the simpler method of silkscreening she uses in the book and it really does seem straightforward. I can't wait to get started!!

Oh, and the Aunt Sarah + Uncle Pete dolls are another favorite of mine. I think the boys would get a big hoot out of some Big J and Baby J dolls. This book is really awesome, just like Amy, and the perfect companion to her first book, Bend the Rules Sewing.

P.S. If you live in the PDX area, Amy is having a book signing at Powell's Books this Sunday, 9.20.09 at 7:30pm. I'll be there to get my book signed and hopefully win one of her homemade cakes!!
