Happy Easter! Hope you had a wonderful day with your loved ones. I don't know about you, but Easter crept up on me really quickly this year. In some ways it feels like we skipped Easter last year since we were living overseas and traveling to Hong Kong + Macau during that time. And although our family is pretty low-key when it comes to Easter, we're more about the hope than bunnies + egg hunts, I wanted to do something special for the boys.
A few years ago we gave the boys little craft toolboxes which they still use on a regular basis. This year I decided to put together little secret agent/spy kits for the boys. The kit included a spy glass telescope, spy pen [invisible ink + blacklight], notebook [I added a "TOP SECRET" label], secret agent badge, hat [fedora from Target], classic disguise glasses, magnifying glass and retrovision glasses [my favorite, it has mirrors on the edges so you can see behind you]. [Most of the goodies are from Kids At Heart.]
I put all the secret agent goodies in little briefcases made out of industrial wool felt that I picked up in Korea. I think I might be addicted to sewing with wool felt, I love the weight of it and the fact that you don't have to finish the edges. I cut out a rectangular piece of felt [10"x12"], sewed two handles on the short ends and sewed up the sides. You could make a button closure for the top, but I opted to keep it open. I then used my rolling alphabet stamp + fabric ink + twill tape to make little agent labels that were sewn on to the briefcases.
I typed out a little "TOP SECRET" letter to the boys explaining that they needed to find the dinosaur eggs which were hidden throughout the house. I stole Amy's idea of filling the eggs with gold $1 coins. A few of the coins contained a mini lizard + toy snake. And although I didn't include any candy in their Easter goodies, I can't say that they missed it. They had a lot of fun putting their secret agent kit to good use today!
